Gambia is the smallest country on the African continent. On the west side Gambia borders the Atlantic Ocean, on all other sides; the small country is completely surrounded by Senegal.

With its land area 11.000km² Gambia is therefore only about half the size of Switzerland.
The maximum east-west stretch of land is 480 km, in the north-south stretch the figure is at its widest point is only 65 km, at the narrowest point even 24 km. The lifeline of the country, the Gambia River , which flows through the state over its entire length and in a northern and southern half shares.
The popularly told that no village Gambia more than 25 kilometers away from the river bank. The coastline on the Atlantic Ocean, the attracts numerous visitors each year with its idyllic beaches, around 80km long.
